I finally checked mine today, yep, same paint wear. How do you loosen the tail light assembly to file down a little of the plastic?
I'd advise talking to the dealer first since you got a brand new one like me.

I think Ford should have a go or two at correcting this before I have to resort to filing down an expensive new tail light.

Paint quality is terrible, i also have a huge gouge between the cab and bed, a chip on the passenger side A pillar and a mark on the driver side front fender.
My third new Ford. First one was bought back for bad paint, it was missing under the clear coat on all the edges. 2nd one was better but still not perfect, drops and blobs on several edges and the painted black roof was very mediocre quality with blobs and poor masking.

You're never going to get a great paint job from Ford. I thought I looked over my truck real good for issues before buying, but some things still snuck by me.

At least its in a very minor spot that nobody else is ever going to notice. I will bring it up at my first oil change and see what their solution will be, I think mine needs to chip worse before they'd actually do anything.

I definitely have some form of Stockholm syndrome or PTSD from my experiences with Ford, but I keep buying them because they are the coolest.

I noticed the chip on mine yesterday, driverside tail light. Why hasn't Ford fixed this issue. I'd understand if it was just happening this year, but it's been a cpl years now. Paint quality is terrible, i also have a huge gouge between the cab and bed, a chip on the passenger side A pillar and a mark on the driver side front fender. I'm supposed to be getting a full XPEL wrap, but now I have to hold off since there's panels that need to be fixed. My first Ford and not having the greatest experience.
Is the Ranger Raptor actually worth buying?

I currently have a 2016 Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition with only 38K miles that I’m considering trading in. I love the Tundra—it’s been a great truck and has been absolutely bulletproof. My biggest complaints are that it’s just too big for city parking and, honestly, it’s not very inspiring to drive.

That’s what has me looking at the Ranger Raptor. It seems like it would give me the practicality of a truck in a smaller, more manageable package while also being a lot more fun to drive.

My hesitation is that I’ve never owned a Ford, and I keep seeing quality-control issues. Every new Ranger Raptor I’ve looked at seems to have something: paint chipped near the driver-side taillight, interior trim pieces that aren’t completely snapped into place, inconsistent panel gaps, etc.

Coming from a Tundra that has given me basically zero problems, that makes me nervous. The wet oil-pump belt is another thing that concerns me when I think about long-term ownership.

For those of you who actually own a Ranger Raptor—especially anyone who came from a Toyota—has it been worth it?

Do you still love the truck after the excitement wore off? Have you had any reliability or build-quality problems? And if you had a low-mileage Tundra like mine, would you make the trade again?

I really like the Ranger Raptor. I’m just wondering whether I’ll love driving it but end up regretting giving up the Tundra’s reliability and build quality.

Thanks!

Nathan

No chips, but I was not happy how close the TL tolerances were after checking both tail lights with a C/C for tolerance… too close! So like others, I removed the taillights and used a fine file to bring both top edges into specs I like. I took off about 1/16” on both. All good now. You can measure thickness with at C/C.Take your time and you will never see its been filed, the plastic light housing is robust. And after filing, It cleans right up. I billed myself 30 min labor.😎

I had some XPEL PPF in my shop and attached a small strip on the painted area where rubbing could be of concern. Probably not necessary, but it can‘t hurt.

This reminds me of why I had the entire truck covered with XPEL PPF. The paint on new vehicles is too dam thin thanks to the EPA.

RR Yes!!! I thought so, and I bought one. Not a daily driver for me, just a crazy fun truck and love it! I also own a 2020 Tundra Pro…a full on keeper. I would think long and hard before selling or trading your 1794 with such low miles. I have ready many many posts on various Tundra forums and FB Tundra pages where 5.7 Tundra owners really 💯regret selling their Tundras.

But in the end you gotta do you.

All the best in your decision!

I just dropped my truck off to get some paint issues fixed and I went into the showroom where they had a brand new ranger raptor with no miles and it also had the paint chip behind the driverside taillight.

You are right about uninspiring to drive.

Back when I had my 2017 Nissan texas titan, I test drove a 2018 1794 tundra.

Worse Gas mileage and not fun to drive was what I left with from the drive.

I would think hard about trading to a ranger raptor for the size difference. I think the 3.0 v6 had been trouble free, from reading on here.

I chose an stx because I wanted a basic truck with as few as possible electronics. My 24 stx has been way more dependable then my titan.... and I loved that titan. It just was in the shop to much for comfort after the warranty ran out.

The tundra though, very boring drive and nothing to make people look and talk to you the Gas station or street corner. The rangers get you people to talk to, that's for sure

Thank you so much for the feedback. It is a hard decision to make. Especially since its a want and not a need.

Even though I love the Tundra I just can't let it sit any longer and let rot when someone else can truly enjoy it. I daily drive my 2024 Golf GTI as I love the vechile and its so practical.

The intent would be to garage keep the GTI for weekends and car meets.

I would daily RR.

But, the quality control on ford has me looking at new Land cruisers in heritage blue.

Thank so much for the feedback. Especially from a fellow Tundra owner.

It definitely has me thinking about the possible regrets of trading in my Tundra.

I have the paint issue above the tail light. The dealer gave me some touch up paint and called it good. Lol. I did have the DS turbo replaced under warranty. Other than that the truck has been very good. Traded my M2 Comp for it and I have 99% no regrets. It so much fun to drive on all surfaces. Where in FL are you located?

Apologies,

I will say that more people have come forward since i have posted to confirm the issue is still present from the factory today.

End and last comment for me for this thread.
I don't think most people on here care that much. @Mystic does it all the time. And I love when he does it! Hahahaha!

I realized my truck had a little paint defect/barb on the lower part of the passenger side door only AFTER I did a walk-around with the PPF shop guy like a month after I bought it, haha...oops. He asked what I wanted to do; I said f*** it and went ahead with the wrap. Wanted to protect the truck from excessive trail striping, mainly.

I guess the moral of the story is you should do walkarounds of your new vehicles, folks :sunglasses:
