Parking Brake Service NOW!!!

Got bit by a gremlin on the way to work this morning at 6500 miles. Just before i got there, i stopped at a convenience store. when i came back out and started the truck, it started screaming at me to "Service Parking Brake NOW!" i was like, wtf? i don't ever use the parking brake, i dont have a need to. tried disengaging/reengaging, etc. tried shutting the truck off and restarting, rolled it forward/backward a couple of feet. nothing would get it to clear. Pressing the OK button would clear the message, but not the dinging. It didn't feel like it was actually engaged as it rolled freely at idle, so i went ahead and made it the rest of the way to work, slowly. let it sit for a couple of hours and after looking at a few things on google checked all the electrical connections on the calipers, etc. didn't find anything wrong. opened the door an the message was already screaming at me, hadn't even gotten in to put the key in. Luckily, there's a Ford Dealer less than a mile from the office, so i told my co workers i was stepping out and why. Took it there and told the service writer all i'd done and said i didn't have any tools on me so i hadn't tried disconnecting the battery yet. so he did that, let it sit for about 15min. and as soon as he reconnected, it started whining again. so i had to leave it there and get a co-worker to come get me. Unluckily, i work 40+ miles from where i live. Luckily, i had a co worker that was able/willing to take me home.

Haven't heard anything yet. they did say the tech probably wasn't going to be able to even look at it until tomorrow.

Interesting. Hopefully it is just a broken wire, but then why would it be broken already. Following.

Personally, I live in a mostly level part of the country. I rarely use my parking brake. I can probably count on two hands how many times I have used it in any vehicle. I only use it when I’m parking on an incline/decline.

what @natethegreat42 said. When i drove manual, i did all the time. But driving an automatic, ive never set the brake unless i’m on an incline/towing. There are not many inclines in and around the Houston area, lol.

and actually, reading the manual, it seems the parking brake already sets and releases automatically when I shift in to/out of park, so I guess I technically use it all the time. Lol

Don't think so on an XLT. The parking brake will automatically disengage when you shift in to drive and push the accelerator pedal. But the automatic engaging is only on trucks with the electric gear shift that will automatically moves into park when the truck is switched off. I think that's only some Lariats and Raptors.

On the Raptor with an electric transmission, the parking brake automatically disengages but does not automatically engage, which I find a shame.

Same thing happened to me. The dealer says it's an issue with the rear axle wiring harness rubbing on something and is now shorting out. 15-20 business days to get a replacement harness the dealer said. They gave me a loaner because they said driving it was unsafe.

If you get a chance, find out what the harness is rubbing on. Would be nice to know so others could inspect and address the rubbing before it's an issue. Thanks.

Well, goes to show how well written and not-at-all vague our owner’s manual is.

Heard from the dealer. Unfortunately that doesn’t mean anything. Apparently the tech can’t figure out what’s wrong so they “are in communication with Ford and waiting for a response.”

If you get a chance, find out what the harness is rubbing on. Would be nice to know so others could inspect and address the rubbing before it's an issue. Thanks.
