Anybody know if the posted values for the 2.3L (and 2.7L) are based on using regular vs premium fuel? I noticed on the Bronco build, they list different numbers based on the fuel grade. I imagine there is some tuning differences between the bronco and ranger, but basically the same engines, no?

I had a 2018 F-150, I currently have a 2022 F-150, both 2.7 ecoboost, and I mix a bottle of jet fuel, "STP" octane boost with 87 octane gas with every fill up and the difference is very noticeable. I don't remember what it runs like without it, because once you put it in you don't want go without it. The Ranger Raptor I ordered is going to my wife and you better believe I'm the one that's going to be filling it up because I'll be taking it out every Saturday morning while she sleeps in.

Unless they changed this recently, All ford ecoboost stats are based on premium fuel. Most say they don't require premium fuel, but to maximize their potential you'll need to run 91 or higher octane. I always have and there is a difference.

Not sure on the Ranger, but the 2.3 in the Mustang is 30 hp difference if you run 87 vs 91. And you can DEF feel the difference when driving it. That is only 10% (Mustang is 310hp) but it sure feels like more. You can also watch the boost gauge and see that it will not push as much psi with lower octane; presumably due to knock.

Doesn't surprise me at all. These engines absolutely perform better with premium fuels.

this popped up on other forums stating the 2.7 with premium fuel indeed get 330 HP so a 15 HP gain with no mods?? Anyone still buying this? I don't really feel the difference the couple times I went premium.

With my 2025 2.7L I have noticed a marked difference between premium and regular gas. Now to quantify this a bit, the Ranger is totally stock and I've only been running Costco and Chevron gas through it, using Mobil 1 oil, and doing nearly all driving in town. Surprisingly, I'm achieving about a 3 mpg economy increase using both 89 octane Costco and Chevron, and it is definitely repeatable. With 89 octane I've been getting 19.9 mpg according to the truck, and 19.6 according to my hand calculations. When I switch to 91 octane fuel, my fuel economy start so drop until it hits 16.8 according to the truck's computer and at fill up my calculations show 16.7. As soon as I switch back to 89 octane, fuel economy begins to climb back to 19.9. Can't explain it. But other than fuel economy, I've noticed absolutely no performance difference between 89 and 91 octane fuel.

91 and 93 make a noticeable difference on my truck. but i have to run 91 all the time since i have the procal on it

Any vehicle with a turbocharged engine will see performance & efficiency improvements from higher octane. So that would apply to both the 2.3L and 2.7L.

In the past, engines couldn't/didn't compensate for octane being too low and you'd get engine knock. These days engines can compensate if you want to cheap out, but you're losing out on power and mpgs. I only run 91 (93 if available) in my 2.3L.
