For years I’ve been hearing acronyms for Ford that imply that they’re undependable and break down on the side of the road, yet I rarely ever see a Ford disabled along the highway that I commute daily. If I do, it’s typically a flat or an accident. Most of the break-downs end up being GM, Chrysler, Hyundai, and Kia (in this area).

is this the case with anyone else or is this just “regional” because there may be more GMs in the area (we have an assembly plant).

Thoughts? I’m curious as to what auto-maker “really seems to be leaving drivers stranded on the highway.”
Here in Minnesota its not so much trucks breaking down on the road as it is 4 wheelers and snowmobiles in pickup beds, mainly GM, Chevy and Ram. Its perfect logic, they're life boats.

Please, nobody post the Pontiac one!
I have a good friend and he and I have chided each other for years over Ford vs Chevy. Good natured poking at each other. For a year, I sent him a picture every time I saw a ford truck pulling a chevy truck home. I never once got a picture of a chevy pulling a ford home.

in my part of town its all dodges and jeeps on the side of the road abandoned or broke. not wranglers but the other ones. on the beach we always see rams 4x4 overheating or rear diffs going for some odd reason. oddly Subarus are fantastic on the beach.

I've seen every brand broken down on the side of the road, but LEAST around here that I see are Toyota, Mazda, Honda's (classic Jap brands), Ford trucks and heavy-duty trucks of all three US brands (aka the 2500's and 3500's). I don't really ever see any Ford, GM / Chevy or Dodge 2500's or 3500's, most of which are diesel or heavy-duty gassers.

I've seen several GMC / Chevy and Dodge 1500's, but not so much though the Colorado's. Never seen a Taco broken down around here, but I did see a 3rd gen on the roadside during a trip. Dodge stopped making the Dakota's a long time ago, on rare occasion I see a dilapidated Dakota on the highway that's literally got giant rust holes all over the body, but it is running.

Seen several Kia's / Hyundai's and BMW's also broken down (also towed a Hyundai on a car dolly last year when I first got my RR), though the BMW's were usually newer, so guessing a mfg. flaw that set off a CAN bus cascade failure of one of their 8+ billion sensors. Almost never see the older BMW's broken down though. Maybe one Mercedes.

Overall, I'd say the Korean brands tend to be the most common for me to see on the side of the road, or the old US made cars from the late 1990's to early 2k (a 90's Exploder er Explorer here and there). My parents had a 1996 Edie Bauer Edition Explorer V6, engine catastrophically failed at 160k miles due to Ford using two different allows between the block and heads, causing thermal fatigue failure. It was a common problem with the 90's Ford V6's, once they stopped doing that the issue disappeared.

As cheap as the Ford Focus was, I don't really see any broken down hardly, just as a Gen 1 Focus yesterday still driving around (aka the one they advertised when the Matrix came out). I had a 2007 ST I bought used right after I graduated college with my tax return one year in cash. Drove it to 175k, beat on it daily, ran fine but had a bunch of stupid stuff that went wrong (heat seat element burned up, door locks seizing up, front lower A arm bushings had to be replaced etc.), but it ran! Sold it still running for 1.5k to some guy out of state that just needed a beater for work, then got my first Mustang (2015 Ecoboost), then traded that in for the GT 5.0L cause the 2.3L didn't have enough power.

After my spouse passed away and I re-married, ended up trading in the GT for a CX-9 since we needed a family vehicle merging two families. Then finally after 6 years....got my Raptor!

I don’t have pictures of all of my Ford’s, but this was my daily driver from 2016-2025 (had a red 96 GT from 2007-2016). Sold this black S197 and bought the Ranger (no regrets). Never let me down, just Blizzaks for winter and standard maintentance (aside from mods).

Architect & Business Owner... commercial projects for over 40 years.
A respected & much venerated mechanical engineer (commercial HVAC & plumbing systems) I worked with in Atlanta once advised me (a brand new registered architect & "still wet behind the ears"):
"Mechanical equipment doesn't ware in... it wares out & brakes!"
I've never forgotten that.

Most commercial buildings have over a million parts (many of them duplicates)... not 1 perfectly made or perfectly installed.
Our modern day vehicles are built millions of times & never perfectly. How many parts in each one? Experience tells us they will break... it's a matter of time.
In the last 40 years or so, I've had several F-150s & GM vehicles. Always had great service from the Fords.
Maintenance, maintenance & maintenance!

There's always an assortment of vehicles on the side of the road. Dead? Maybe. Most have some sticker from local LEO that indicates the abandoned vehicle is documented. Could be perfectly running vehicles stopped for DUI driver.
