Anyone else buy the Spare Tire Lock?

Once I realized that the spare-tire lowering mechanism on the Ranger is protected by plastic plug, I purchased the OEM spare tire lock.

My dad had two spares stolen off his trucks over the course of his life. He eventually started using a chain and padlock wrapped around the spare and the frame and it never happened again. Sure, the chain could have been cut. And sure, this lock doesn’t guarantee your spare won’t get stolen. But it might frustrate a thief enough to make them steal someone else’s spare instead.

i have not but i have had the spare stolen from under the truck back in the 90s and none since so i have not really thought about locking them up anymore

The 5G Rangers came with these (keyed to match the vehicle.) There were several complaints about them seizing up and not turning because they collect road grime. Probably not an issue if you regularly check it when you check the spare.

I did. Disappointed that it didn’t match the ignition. Have to keep another key around just to deal with it.

Yeah, that part is a pain. I just duct taped mine to the jack.

One of the first things I did when I got my truck was a dry run removing the spare and it wasnt easy in my driveway during the day, Im not worried about anyone trying to snag it.

I Agree! It really is the ugliest steel wheel ever seen.
It doesnt match my wheels.
It is the crappiest tire on earth! ( kelvinator all season!) LOL
I'm never using it unless I get a flat in the middle of nowhere

It’s not that I would mourn the loss of the spare. It’s that I live in a rural area and drive a lot of rural roads. It would be quite inconvenient to get a flat and then realize my spare was missing.

and all this does is lock the hole where you insert the jack in?

it’s probably easy just to punch out the lock or cut the spare tire cable

i feel like if a crook is sophisticated enough to go around with the right tool and knowledge to lower the Ranger spare, they are smart enough to target a vehicle with a spare that is worth stealing

The Raptors do have a 5th BFG KO3 tire on a steel wheel - worth a bit I suppose but not the hastle.

I had one on my 2012 F-150, and it got so rusty that it wouldn't turn anymore. It was a waste of money.
