Hey everybody, just spent the afternoon scoping the intake valves thru the spark plug holes and was surprised by the amount of buildup there was after 34k miles. This video shows the results. Curious if anyone else did a similar test and can give me an idea if I’m seeing normal buildup or if it is excessive. I getting the BG Platn induction cleaning service done on Monday and will do follow up videos but I’m thinking a dual valve catch can may als be useful since the intake itself was pretty clean and the dual catch can runs from the driver side to the intake manifold.
Cheers everyone! I still love this truck!

Thank you for taking the time to do this! Curious to see how they look after the service as well as 2k miles afterward.

Thanks again!

you and me both! I have already decided that if the BG Playnum doesn’t get it cleaned up, im gonna invest in a walnut blaster system and give that a shot! I’ll keep everyone posted and I’ll be sure to post here as I progress!

I did end up buying a new BoreScope camera with side view cameras integrated into the barren instead of having to pivot the main camera. It makes for a much better picture but still not anything at the level of some of the more expensive professional grade cameras out there. For u def $100 I’m super happy with the results though!

cheers!

Which one did you get? Images looked better than the first video.

Thats the result of DI and driving a lot on trails at slow speeds. Low oil pressure and rotational velocity with high temps is a combination for boil off. Not sure what oil he uses, but honestly those valves aren't as bad as you think, they look nasty but the thickness of the film isnt that bad.

Look at DI engines that see short trips for 100k miles and the valves have so much carbon and suite its piled on. That amount isnt going to affect air flow and until its at a point of affecting air flow its irrelevant.

Also note the big no no ive been saying, an aftermarket air intake. Those reusable filters simply dont do as good of a job as paper disposable. A lot of that buildup looks like a combination of oil vapor and contaminants, it looks gritty like dust mixed with oil vapor.

Anyone know if he was using synthetic blend or full synthetic and was it Motorcraft or something else? Oil base stock quality has a big effect on NOAC.

I would argue the 2.7L in an XLT or Lariat trim with dual injection is better suited to trail work because it obviously has port injectors in addition to direct injection. Raptor really isnt a trail truck in my opinion due to having a performance DI engine, BUT you certainly can use it for that, just may need to do induction cleaning every 60k~75k.

You just cant use the 3.0Ls power on trails and those are probably the worst conditions other than short trips for carbon buildup on intake valves, but they have to get a lot dirtier than that before there are performance issues.

On a side note, what something looks like isnt really relevant, if theres no power loss on a dyno or hesitation its obviously not affecting function. So, maybe 50k, 75k or 100k induction cleaning makes sense depending on cost / driving conditions etc.

No idea how he drives or what oil he uses but there is no way that that motor flows the same amount of air that it did when new. Those valves look like shit.

Unfortunately looks typical for a TGDI engine. I'm a little surprised by that amount of buildup at 34K miles. Interested to see what it looks like after your intake service. I suspect walnut shell cleaning is going to be needed though.

Kinda glad I have the 2.7L engine.

Thanks for the work on this. I made sure to watch it on YouTube so I could like & subscribe.

What gas & octane do you use?

What oil due you use? How often have you changed your oil?

Is ethanol content in E10 fuel has any effect (positive or negative)on the carbon buildup at all?

It has no positive or negative effective on carbon build-up. When the fuel is introduced in the combustion chamber, the intake valves aren't exposed to fuel (wash).

Looks about like any normal intake tract to me. I've seen some pictures of really fouled 3.5 ecoboosts (gen 1) and those noticably were blocking air flow. The amount you have will do something because of surface roughness, whether that's good or bad I wouldn't know and is the subject of much debate. If it bothers you, light water injection by the throttle body is an option, and you'll get some anti knock benefits.
