HI all,

We have a 2024 Ranger with tow package (2.4L Ecoboost) and a capacity of 7,500 lbs.

We recently upgraded our TT to a 30 ft. Surveyor Legend, 6,400 lbs. loaded. We are 400 lbs within payload.

Do you think our Ranger will handle this setup with mountains/hills or am I looking at a larger truck?

Thanks so much!

Personally I would not tow that with a Ranger and would get a larger truck. The length would concern me the most.

We are looking at getting a Winnebago 2108TB (22' 5" long and 5,500 lb GVWR). I can't imagine towing anything much bigger than that.

i would be worried pulling a 30 foot travel trailer with a truck as small as ours. i pulled a 27 or 30 for my parents with my half ton and you knew it was back there in the wind and hills

"Trailer length should be considered in relation to your tow vehicle's wheelbase to avoid sway, as a longer tow vehicle's wheelbase provides more stability and leverage against a long trailer. A common guideline suggests a 20-foot trailer for a 110-inch wheelbase, adding one foot of trailer length for every additional four inches of wheelbase."

The Ranger has a 128 inch wheelbase. Using that rule of thumb, you should keep your trailer length to no more than 24 or 25 feet.

You're JUST within the weight limits, but a 30 feet long trailer is way too long REGARDLESS of weight.

That sounds really light for a 30' trailer, especially when this floorplan has the UVW at over 7,700lbs: https://forestriverinc.com/rvs/surveyor-legend/303BHLE/12118 - it's hard to imagine another floorplan of the same model will be more than a 1/2 ton lighter.

Aside from the length being too long for a mid-size, I strongly suspect that both the real world trailer weight AND the real world hitch weight will both be over the specs for the truck (7,500lbs and 750lbs, respectively). Then there's payload, and you'll be lucky to have enough left for a driver, let alone family, pets, toys, gear, etc.

Thanks Stemplar. Our floorplan is the 252RBLE with a dry weight of 5,832 lbs.
We've decided to get a RAM 1500 with the 3.0L I6 Twin Turbo Hurricane engine. 11,300 is plenty of leg room for towing. :)

Don't forget the length aspect. Using the rule of thumb I cited above, your tow vehicle should have a wheelbase of at least 150", which that truck may or may not be. It depends on the configuration.

Make sure you get the complete tow package, 4wd, and proper axle ratios, you need it for that big trailer. I quite like the Hurricane inline six design, everything seems to be very accessible compared to twin turbo V6 engines like the Toyotas. I hope you don’t need to take advantage of that feature.

For towing, a full sized truck will give you SOOO much more usable volume for carrying all your camping stuff. Rangers are pretty tight for that.

We tow a 20ft 3800lbs (loaded) travel trailer with our Ranger. Personally, I wouldn’t go any bigger than that. Wind gusts and tractor trailers remind you that she’s back there. Definitely go with a bigger truck if that’s the size camper you’re gonna tow.

the wife and i used to own a traveler trailer that was 3200 pounds unloaded. and it had a full bathroom, not one of those crappy toilet shower combos. i think that would be a great travel trailer for a ranger. we owned it for 4 or 5 years and other then one year when south texas had a bad freeze and the toilet flush valve (flapper valve) froze and cracked, we never had a bit of trouble. i did replace the ac with a larger unit because the original started losing efficiency in the 110+ degree humid summers and once i did that, the wife complained it was to cold.

here is what we had, a 2017 starcraft launch 17qb.
