Hopefully better than the 5g fx4, because those "off road tuned" dampeners were garbage. I did not realize how bad they were until I added Eibach pro truck 2.0

I just test drove a lariat v6 fx4 and i was really impressed with how smooth the fx4 suspension rode. It was even smoother than my stx (which every person that ride in it cant believe how smooth it rides).

I feel like it is a little on the firm side on the road, but not in a bad way. I think it is tuned to go over bigger bumps.

But I don’t think I test drove the non fx4 so I have no comparison.

According to Google Gemini AI,

While both the standard and FX4 models share the same basic suspension geometry, the differences in the shocks come down to valving and rear shock architecture.

1. Monotube vs. Twin-Tube (The Rear Shocks)
The most significant hardware difference is in the rear.

  • Standard XLT: Uses traditional twin-tube shocks. These are great for comfort on paved roads but can "fade" (lose damping effectiveness) if you’re driving over washboard dirt roads for a long time, as the oil can foam up.
  • FX4 Package: Upgrades the rear to monotube shocks. These have a single cylinder and a floating piston that keeps the high-pressure gas and oil separate. This design dissipates heat much faster, meaning the shocks won't get "tired" during extended off-road sessions.
    +1
2. "Off-Road Tuning" (The Valving)
Ford engineers change the internal valving to prioritize different types of impacts:

  • Regular Shocks: Tuned for a "plush" feel on the street. They are designed to soak up small road imperfections (expansion joints, small potholes) to give you a smooth, car-like ride.
  • FX4 Shocks: Feature a firmer compression. This helps the truck "stay upright" and controlled when you hit larger ruts or dips at speed. On the highway, some owners find the FX4 ride a bit "busier" or stiffer because the shocks aren't as soft on small bumps, but they offer much better body control when the terrain gets uneven.

So you are saying that.its.probably ok to change the fx4 shocks if the stock non fx4 shocks wear out?

** Disclaimer I am not an expert but Gemini AI says the following **

Replacing your stock non-FX4 shocks with the FX4-spec shocks is not only "probably ok"—it is a direct, compatible bolt-on swap. Since both versions of the Ford Ranger share the same chassis and suspension geometry, the mounting points are identical.

Here is a breakdown of what you should know before making the switch:

1. Fitment and Compatibility
The FX4 shocks (traditionally monotube shocks, often tuned by Bilstein or similar manufacturers depending on the specific year) are designed to fit the exact same brackets as your current twin-tube stock shocks. You won't need any special adapters or modifications to the suspension arms.

2. Ride Quality Differences
You will notice a change in how the truck handles. Because you have the 2.7L V6, your front end is slightly heavier than the standard 2.3L models, making high-quality damping even more noticeable.

  • Off-Road: The FX4 shocks are tuned for better "bottoming" resistance and faster heat dissipation, which helps on washboard roads or trails.
  • On-Road: They are generally stiffer. You might feel small bumps and road imperfections (like expansion joints) more than you do now, but the truck will feel more "planted" and have less "float" or bounce after hitting a large dip.
3. Should You Go with OEM FX4 Shocks?
While the FX4 shocks are an upgrade over the base shocks, many owners find that for the same price (or slightly more), aftermarket options provide a better "bang for your buck."

  • Bilstein 4600: Essentially a high-quality version of the FX4 shock. It’s designed for stock-height trucks and offers excellent longevity.
  • Bilstein 5100: If you ever plan on "leveling" the front of your truck to get rid of the factory rake, these are the gold standard. They are height-adjustable and very durable.
  • So you are saying that.its.probably ok to change the fx4 shocks if the stock non fx4 shocks wear out?

As much as I love artificial intelligence intelligence, when I track back its sources I can’t find one that definitively says 2024+ Ranger rear shock is monotube on the fx4

It appears gemini is using some of the f150 and ranger5g information

Although I do believe that the Ranger fx4 is designed as stated to be a little more firm over the paved road small bumps but handle the off road larger bumps better.

The damping on my ‘21 Ranger Lariat 4x4 was terrible. I like the damping on my ’24 Ranger Lariat FX4 w/2.7l a lot better. The truck doesn’t oscillate now as compared to the last model after going over speed bumps or pot holes.

It’s interesting that ford Canada implies that the fx4 lariat 2.3 and 2.7 have different shocks vice the Xlt or xl fx4

I got the FX4 package on my '26 Ranger Lariat mainly because of the skid plates, since here in NH they will help keep out some of the ridiculous amounts of road salt the state puts down. The locking diff, drive modes, and better shocks were just bonuses. I will tell you that my truck has a very nice, solid and smooth ride and almost feels as good as my crew-cab longbed F150, which has the best ride of any truck I've owned. Is it the FX4 shocks? Who knows, but I think these days most vehicles ride so much better than the old days anyway.

I think sometimes people over-analyze small details which in actuality don't really matter. Let's face it, most of these Rangers don't go off-road, and those that do aren't exactly running them so hard that the shocks are having "heat dissapation" issues.

I also took the FX4 decals off the day the truck came home.

Exactly this! AI is better named "Enhanced Web Search" because all it does is search the web then summarize the results. I can't stand when people in forums or social media use AI as a source because of the circular nature it creates: nonsense is stated in a post (e.g. "wET bELt bAd"), AI scrapes it, AI regurgitates it to forum member who reposts it to the forum as a source. The more something is said online the more weight AI engines will assign to it.

I am torn about the decal but leaving it on for now ;).

I am just curious what the differences really are in the suspension. Devling into the vagaries of the ford parts databases it looks like the springs are the same. But the shocks are different.

I agree the FX4 package is plenty for my limited off roading requirements.
