I don't mind that it is plastic, the problem is that the oil gushes out when you remove the plug.
That’s why I’m quite curious about this new design: I’m wondering if that thin gap across the threads leading up to a hole is intended to allow oil to flow at a more controlled rate when you have the plug part-way removed??

I can't believe Ford went with a plastic drain plug. Is the oil pan plastic too?

Addendum
: I googled the oil pan

No, the 2024 Ford Ranger does not have a plastic oil pan
; it has a steel one. While Ford has used plastic engine oil pans on some engines in the past, the 2024 Ranger is manufactured with a steel oil pan

For over a 100 years everyone used a metal bolt Now plastic that is dangerously stupid
And for over 99 years people have been stripping threads in oil pans because the plugs are harder than the pan. Then came composite pans which are softer and more brittle than aluminum.

The people stripping oil pan drain bolts should not change the oil

That would be nice to control the oil flow. If not, I'll have a piece of hose ready to hold up to the drain hole. First oil change for the RR is coming soon.

I ordered a drain plug from ford parts for the ranger raptor. The new one (o the right) looks different, it’s got two o rings instead of just one and it’s just longer in general. I haven’t had the chance to install it yet because I didn’t change the oil yet. But it is supposed to replace the old one.

On the website, it lists it as compatible with the 3.0 V6 among other engines. The image on the product page is literally the old one.

So I’m guessing this is a revision and supposed to be an improvement over the old one.

What are your thoughts on this? The part number is ML3Z-6730-B.

It's been updated because of Ford receiving reports on previous plastic type oil pans and drain plugs leaking. Years ago they also update other type of connection issues with dual o-ring instead of a single, Ex. on some transmission cooler lines, AC lines etc.... Strange they would try single o-rings in the first place from previous experience! Yet the 2.3l is still the good old fashion metal one! Note the slot and the hole, suppose to aid in controlling the out flow!?!?

Picked up a spare drain plug as the first oil change is happening this week. Since I was at the local Ford dealer, I used some points for a engine air and oil filters and a cabin filter.

I just bought this same one for my next oil change! Jinx. Not so much due to cost of not replacing a factory one every 2-3 changes, but the mess! The oil just pours all over the wiring harness and makes a big mess. Gets all over my hands too because the drain opening is much larger than an M12 bolt style, so it drains fast!

They probably did that to facilitate faster oil changes to milk more money from the service side (charge the same amount but pay less labor hours to the techs waiting for the slower drain). For me, I'd rather have convenience and low mess, so UPR it is!

Hopefully they don’t warp like the F150 plastic pans do - $3000 repair at the dealer.

that why my buddy said to make sure and get a 2020 or newer raptor (i think it was 2020 because we were looking at 19 raptor and stopped looking at it after he told me about that)
