Im confused at how this gauge works. I have my coolant temp gauge next to the oil coolant gauge. The coolant gauge goes up as the engine warms up, as usual. However, the oil temp gauge bounces with the throttle. Even when the truck is fully warmed up and the coolant temp is in the middle, the oil will be close to the "L" and then when I give it some throttle, it creeps up towards the "H". And when I let off it goes right back to the "L".

Is this a temp or a pressure gauge?

I think the oil gauge you refer to is for oil pressure, L for low and H for high. Oil temperature on the other hand would have C for cold and H for hot on the other end of the scale and your region's temperature unit just below it.

Right, that makes sensse. I think Id rather have an oil temp gauge up there. I guess pressure will do.

You are correct - oil pressure the life line of all engines

Old thread so you've likely discovered this by now, but you can change the left 3 gauges out (fuel level cant be swapped). Oil temp is one of the ones you can opt for.

You can additionally change out what "screens" appear in the bottom middle, there's one called measurements, and "My Gauges". The My Gauges are 2 gauges of your choice and measurements are a whole bunch of different gauge info presented as real time numbers.

I have mine set to display oil temp. Once and while it will display oil pressure. It’s really surprising to see the gauge move so quickly when I’m used the temp only gradually go up.

After a shut down and start up, it will show the correct temp display again. Really weird bug.

Yeah I figured it all out. But only the middle two can be changed, not three.

Fwiw oil pressure is more meaningful then oil temp. Water temp will show you if the engine is overheating and oil pressure will normalize once the oil temperature has stabilized i.e. it'll start high when the engine is cool, spike a bit when the oil starts thickening at temp, and then drop once the oil passages in the block expand after heating up.

Pay attention to what your oil pressure gauge looks like and you'll never need oil temp, just water temp.

Just made my first road trip, 2025 Ford Ranger 2.3L. It now has 1000 miles. About 3/4’s through the trip I swapped the oil pressure gauge for the oil temperature gauge, it was running high, then went up a pretty good grade, it went to the start of the red and 260 degrees came on under the gauge, once I was over the grade it went down some, was able to pull off freeway and check oil level, it was fine, didn’t seem overly hot, the temp gauge seems to stay at about 2/3rds, all other gauges are right in the middle, straight up. My Ford dealership is about 50 miles away, going to call tomorrow, have a picture of the the 260 degree temp

Follow up, the dealer said no codes were thrown and everything was normal. Drove home, changed the oil (1055 miles). Just driving home on freeway oil temp gauge was at 2/3’s, 38 degrees outside. Ford gauges always read straight up or in the middle. At least my concern is on record.

My 2025 Ranger vertical oil temperature gauge reads on the high side of half way also at freeway speeds. No hills and 40 degrees F. Around town it reads half way. This my be inherite to the new for 2025 2.3L dual fuel system (combining port and direct injection). This is something that needs to be addressed by Ford engineers.

Why do you think it needs to be addressed? It is normal for oil temps to rise at high RPM, especially on a turbocharged engine. Modern oils are designed to handle it and there is nothing to worry about as long as you keep up on oil changes.

BTW if you switch on your climate control in hot weather you will notice both the EOT and ECT will drop due to the shutters being open.

You don't have a 2.3L even, let alone the new for 2025 Modular power cylinder (MPC) architecture. Gauges are designed to run at halfway correct. 2/3rds or 3/4s is abnormal. If it were a airplane it would be grounded.

OK what are the actual oil temps you are seeing? And not owning a 2.3 has nothing to do with oil temp knowledge. My diesel 2.0 TDI ran up to 250F EOT on grades and my OM642 Sprinter runs as high as 270F on steep grades. What is your actual number? How accurate do you think the factory idiot gauges are? Are they stepped?

BYW on my 2.7 the EOT idiot gauge is in line with the bottom of the little oil can icon around town but on the highway it rises to the top of the little icon. If I switch on the HVAC it drops a little and on my SG3 the coolant temp drops about 10 degrees when the HVAC is on. There is no ECM info available for EOT.
