Preparing for the Procal tune to be installed

I have the procal tuner in hand but have been waiting to break the truck in a bit. I now have 1600 miles and a dealership that will do the install. Im Anxious to see any positive input from this forum. I also suggest ignoring AlpineBike, as I've not read a single positive post yet from him.

You can absolutely do most of the preinstall yourself, However the for performance technician at your local Ford dealership should and most likely will do everything (to include registration).

My dealer charged me an hour and it took 15mins, so they also gave me a free oil change to level out the charges.

I'm not sure my little dealer even has a performance technician Small town, knew a ADE Master Tech. Depending on their hourly - mine is $150 - maybe now but surely in early days of the tune for the 2.3 dealers were charging as much as 3 hours, and as you may have read some won't install if you don't buy from them and there are other customer unfriendly situations for sure. The 2.3 tune when it came out had a K/N filter too, my dealer charged me like $10 for the time it took him to put that in while the tune uploaded to the truck. Dealer changed got absorbed by a large regional outfit necessitating using ASE.

The only part of your warranty they can deny is if they deem a failure occurred because of the way in which it was installed.

Absolutely correct. and if you threatened fords warranty with a lawsuit they would INSTANTLY cover the questionable denial.

Folks just don't understand that the dealership or ford has to PROOVE their very own tuner caused an issue just because it wasn't installed by a certified person....not gonna happen.

I think the problem with options in some threads is they deviate from the original topic. The op in this case asked what he could or not do, not if he should do. I started a thread on who installed it themselves, turned into if you should or should not, not the intention. Just a thought.

I thought that was the best answer and one that I thought about myself. I ended up doing it myself because I didn't want to drop the truck off for half a day and pay that money for something so incredibly simple.

Now if I brick the ECU during the install then that's on me but I figured that it would cost me the same to have Ford mobile come out and reprogram my ECU if that happened.

Maybe, but my aim was to minimize shop time. I already had decided to have the shop do it and the point of my post was to ask if there was anything I could do ahead of time to make things go quicker (to save both my time and money). That could depend a lot on who is doing the install...some dealers will charge you the minimum hour or 1.5 hours even if it takes 15 minutes because you did all the leg work. However, some shops won't charge you any more than the time it takes for them to do their part. I've seen a lot of posts here and other places online by owners doing the prep work and then having an ASE mechanic press the install button for $50 or a case of beer LOL

Find me one case where anyone bricked the ECU or even had a warranty claim remotely related to the tune that either was or wasn't honored .... not being snarky, but if I missed that, shame on me

Why does anyone care if anyone else wants to spend their money on having a dealer or ASE install this tune? It's their truck and their money. I don't get why this issue strikes such a chord in people. I assume if someone did the install themselves, then they are confident they won't have any issues should a warranty claim arise. That's great for them...as for anyone that prefers to have the warranty for whatever reason...it's their decision and really should not be up for debate by anyone else.

Understand, I'm just wondering. It may be that worry about warranty isn't that critical an issue. Not trying to sway anyone that thinks they need to do it either of the three ways, or goodness forbid, tell someone how to spend their money

The certificate for the tune is tied to a Ford Performance account. If Ford Performance updates the tune, you'll need the credentials to the Ford Performance account that was used to download the tune to get the update (and re-install on the ecu).
If you don't have the access to the account, you'll have to purchase the tune again.

Maybe the dealer can work with FP to avoid the additional charge, maybe the dealer is organized and keeps track of the credentials, but I'd feel better knowing the FP account is in my name and email and I have the ability to retrieve the credentials.

At a minimum, I'd create a Ford Performance account and when it's time to have the dealer/ase tech install the tune, change the password temporarily and give the tech your credentials.

Not sure that presenting options is meant to be other than information shared, not a criticism of one way other the other....although it may seem that people are taking or presenting those opinions as the only one a reasonable person would chose
