So does the bottom half of the taillights just not ever light up other than reverse? I've never seen it lit up.

I believe they do on the Rangers than have the upgraded LED lighting package. So the Raptors will as standard, but the rest need to have the LED upgrade

Did some research and you are correct. Another thread created about a year ago verified this.

And you would think for the price of it they would throw a regular bulb in there.
For real, especially if it was related to safety.

From some diagrams I am seeing, it looks like the BLIS system is somewhere in the middle of the assembly and the bottom half MIGHT potentially have the fittings for a lightbulb to be installed. Whether or not the wiring is there on the truck side I do not know but I might take it apart and have a look. I doubt it.

Only the Raptor does this my top of the line Lariat FX4 also only lights the top section. Ford saving a few bucks. Instead of just producing one set of LED's they did two. One with top only and one with both. The bottom half is just a reflector.

DOT requires red reflectors in all tail lights. I guess that's where ford decided to put them. I'm hoping someone like Morimoto will develop an after market tail light.

sitting in line for 30 minutes trying to get on base this morning i have decided our tail lights are better than a lot of other vehicle's tail lights. i thought about this thread while looking at everyone ahead of me who also had their tail lights lit up.

some new vehicles have tall thin tail lights that are also very dim. and some have thin flatter tail lights that don't really attract attention when they come on. if it wasn't for the third brake light on some vehicles, you would think they had their running lights on, not hitting their brakes.

so i am very happy with the lights we have as they are bright and do attract attention when you hit the pedal, which is their job.

I think all 6G Rangers have LED headlights and taillights. That is what I understand from the Build site. Lariat upgrades the headlights from LED reflector to LED projector.

One problem with LED taillights, is that if one goes out, you will have to replace the whole taillight assembly, about $1400 each side.

thats the only thing i worry about... what happens when the leds go out. i would rather have bulbs so i can put an led in the housing and replace it when it goes out.

Couldn't agree more. Replaceable led units would be so much better maintenance wise, and fiscally wise too. A tailight worth over a thousand dollars is ridiculous and very poor engineering. The side obstacle detection module in the taillight requires programming too. Headlights fall in this category too on many cars.

LED last for about 100,000 hours so about 11 years with them being on 24 hours a day 7 days a week. All my vehicles that have had LED I never replaced any. Heck even from the 90's I never replaced a halogen bulb.

I'll agree our trail lights are bright. Just looks off to me that only the top half is lit.

That's a bit of a silly cost-cutting measure.

Just as the front, the rear of a vehicle communicates it's brand, overall design, and intent. A hell of a lot of marketing goes into that, as well as design and, eventually, engineering.

I think it's foolish for them to not use fully lit tail lamps on every Ranger.
