Hate to burst your bubble, but it's more likely going to be the opposite. Robots are good for repeating a single, identical task over and over without error. When you introduce variety (i.e. customization) into the equation, humans are much better at performing the different operations that each configuration requires.

Look at Tesla for example. Their plants are highly automated and their vehicles have very few options available for customization. I think it's safe to expect the same from other manufacturers as full automation becomes more prevalent. Just my two cents.
The customization would be programmed in, just like all other tasks. Human/Robot debate on that pales in comparison to the part number/SKU complexity that customization brings vs. the possible profits it brings.

While you are likely right, I can hope.
In my mind, it would all be based on scanned part code and different instructions would be run based on that. Good engineers could make it happen and account for error conditions. It just depends on the cost aspect for whatever manufacturer.

I hope they come to some sort of agreement to keep the vehicles churning out. It will be better for all.

My thoughts EXACTLY! Literally nobody wins in a strike! It's when ego's and unreasonable demands and/or unreasonable lack of concessions KILLS talks. Just talk, be open, compromise and build! ? ?

I’m always surprised how often trucks don’t have a navy blue option. There’s always a bright blue, but not often a darker/navy version.

As of August 3rd.

The United Auto Workers released their demands ahead of contract negotiations with Detroit’s three major automakers, and union members are ready to get their share of the profits.

New UAW president Shawn Fain laid out what the workers want in a new contract during a livestream earlier this week. Fain has struck a more contentious tone (article wording, not mine) since taking over last March and those recent earnings above expectation might help the union more than automakers heading into bargaining sessions.

The list of demands
UAW's President Fain listed these "audacious" goals:

  • elimination of wage tiers
  • substantial wage increases
  • restoration of cost of living allowance increases
  • defined benefit pension for all workers
  • reestablishment of retiree medical benefits
  • the right to strike over plant closures
  • limits on the use of temporary workers
  • more paid time off
  • increased benefits to current retirees
I could not find anything stating how the talks are proceeding. Since they started in earnest just two days ago, I guess that is not surprising.

You want some entertainment. Print off these demands, remove UAW from the title, and no matter where you work, what industry, go turn them into your boss. Come back and report the response.

I'm not taking sides, but the whole thing always comes off as extremely tone deaf and I see very little (if none) reason to be sympathetic to this cause. The consumer never wins when the union wins.

would love to tell you what I think but the mods tend to frown upon that

Does the UAW president just decide for himself what the workers "want" or do the union members take a vote?

Once the union and employer reach a tentative agreement, UAW union presents it to dues-paying members for discussion, debate and a vote to accept or reject the proposed contract negotiated by their bargaining committee.
