Sound deadening the doors was totally worth the time.

I just wanted to chime in on this. I know a lot of people have done it but just to add in my impressions. I haven’t liked the stock B&O radio in my RR since I purchased the truck and felt I couldn’t ever dial it in right. I found it harsh and the speakers literally distorted vocals in some bass heavy music even without having the bass dialed up. Even after dialing in the EQ on my phone and on the truck the best I could it just wasn’t great to me.

I looked at speakers for the doors as I think the silk dome tweeters are already very good and maybe technically the only high quality speaker in the stock system.

I figured as a first step I would put some sound deadening in the front and back doors. I didn’t want to use a ton as I didn’t want to add a bunch of weight. I used some cheap hollow point deadener behind the speakers and covered that and the rest of the outer door with Siless Hybrid 3 in 1. I also added a number of pieces to the inside of the door panels themselves on larger areas.

And the difference was pretty massive. Wind noise and road noise, especially from the rear doors I think improved a noticeable amount, though the truck was already pretty quiet.

But the speaker difference was substantial. The front speakers are far less boomy and somehow they seem to not be distorting even listening to the same stuff at the same levels and the harshness to the sound is largely gone. All I can think is that the resonance from inside the door was impacting the sound way more than I would have thought.

It’s still not perfect. The mid range is better but not great, I can live with it. I still might add a small sub at a point. But it did make more of a change than I thought so I wanted to share.

Also, another thing I found - the factory vapor barrier was not pressed down or sealed all the way in any single door in my truck. Almost every single one had big sections of the adhesive that wasn’t even making contact with the metal.
It goes along with a number of things I noticed with this truck where it feels like they have some employees at the factory who are lazy/don’t care and don’t have anyone inspecting their work. If it’s machine installed they have some issues. I wouldn’t be surprised if just making that seal helped out a bit.

Very nice! I also installed sound deadening this past Tuesday and I must say definitely worth it. All around improvement in every aspect. I also did notice some parts of the vapor barrier was not properly adhered, but I went over it with the roller tool I used for the sound deadening. For those who haven’t done it and are on the fence about it, do it, you won’t regret it.

This is on my list to do; how long did it take to do? And did you have to replace any plastic clips?
I spent the better part of an afternoon on mine but a buddy and beer was involved.
No problems with any clips but I have a nice 3 piece set of clip tools from Crutchfield. Well worth the time and dollars.

Oh, we also replaced all four door speakers while the door panels were off.

Additionally, a few weeks later I added sound deadening on the bulkhead behind the back seat. IMOP not enough improvement for that effort.

Front doors took around 15-20 min each, rear doors around half an hour each since some cutting and measuring was involved, tools I used were a t20 to remove the 4 screws in the door, body trim panel tool set, utility knife to cut to size, ruler, and a random piece of cardboard to cut on, and the roller to roll on the material. And all clips stayed in tact.

Great post and I can’t agree more with all your points. I ended up using the ResoNix Mega CLD along with their 1” fiber mat fitted to the backside of each door panel in place of that white piece of “linen” they put on from the factory. In some ways I’m glad the vapor barrier was easy to remove, but come on at least press it down all the way! Next up is doing the roof and A pillars. Something that really made my life easier for getting all the clips out intact was these panel clip pliers from harbor freight.
