I wanted to get a 2.3l on a 2025 but it is very hard to find with the options I want. What are yall thinking about the 2.7 v6? Ei fuel mileage and reliability.
TIA
This engine has been in production for a decade, with millions of them installed in various models including especially the F150. Roughly 1,400 of them had a bad batch of bad intake valves a couple of years ago; that made for a lot of press coverage but seriously the number was few & easily identified, plus the valves either broke in a few months or they weren’t part of the bad batch. Regarding fuel economy, it is not uncommon for F150 owners to report 24 MPG highway. I have it in my Bronco and love it!!!

Im at 13000 miles and my mileage is just under 20, but I have level kit and larger tires, so its still pretty good.

As others said, the 2.7 is the reason I bought this truck. I previously had a '19 F150 with the 2.7 and it performed better than my Ram with 5.7L and 8 speed trans.

I love the 2.7 Ranger.

The TFL Trucks testing of the Ranger also helped me decide.

1,600 miles on my ā€˜25 Lariat FX4. I’ve disabled Eco mode with Forscan so it’s one click to Sport when I want worse gas mileage driving around town.

Driving 80mph down to Denver and back I get about 23mpg.

That's better than I get with my 2019 fx4

A bit off topic but..... there was a guy on the F150 forum that traded his 2.7 F150 in with 460,000 miles. I think the only issue he ever had was he had to replace 1 sensor. But @ 460K the transmission was starting to act flakey so he decided it was time to trade it.
What year? The current 2.7’s have a wet belt oil pump.

I love my 2.7L. Very peppy engine, though there is a bit of the turbo lag. I am getting 18mpg city, 23mpg highway.

I have only just recently crossed 1300 miles on 2025 XLT 2.7L but I have no complaints so far! Engine is very smooth, transmission seems to work fine. It does take a little getting used to as I was coming from driving sedans with 6-speed transmissions. But other than that, it’s great! I have been getting between 19-24 mpg depending on where I am driving. Last tank of 250 miles on the trip meter I registered 20.4 mpg with all of that being city driving and some interstate metro driving. I agree with the others - sport mode is way too fun!!

you guys must all live in areas with slower highway speeds or no wind. thats crazy gas mileage compared to down here where we have 80mph highways and 25+mph wind all the time

Having driven the 2.7 in a wide variety of conditions while traveling this rings true. Doing 55-60 in metro areas with good wind breaks can never compare to short stop and start urban trips or totally exposed flat interstate driving with a headwind.

I had a 2021 Ranger with the 2.3L and now a 2024 with the 2.7L. If there’s a MPG penalty it’s subtle enough to not be obvious. That’s a great trade for extra power and better sound.

i also wonder if the extra power of the 2.7 helps when going into a headwind since you would think it would take less gas to keep speed into the wind?

i have a headwind for 50% of any drive i make. i live 1/3-1/2 mile from the gulf of mexico and any drive away is being pushed while any time i return home, its into the wind. i wonder how that extra power would help in my area

I know two people who have the 2.7L in their F150s with nearly 200k trouble free miles also. Each guy said he would buy another in a heartbeat, of course.

Aside from the $2200 price, what’s not to love? We have a ā€˜25 Explorer ST-Line with the 2.3L and it is fine. I have the 2.7L in my ā€˜25 Ranger however, and it’s soooo smooth and with noticeably better NVH. I’m actually getting better fuel economy with mine too, no kidding. Best was 28.3 on a country road averaging 53 mph (pic). Worst has been 22 mpg. I do zero commuting or stop and go driving.

I think the best answer to your question in the title is that there is no consensus; folks that bought the 2.7 love it, and the folks that bought the 2.3 love that too. They're both good.

Paying the extra for the 2.7 was an easy sell on me because the extra power and especially torque while pulling heavy loads on steep grades will always be welcome. I also like the smoothness and lack of raspy 4-cyl sound while driving around town.

I respect anyone who has a 2.3 and wishes to wax poetic about how great that engine is. It is good, and I'm happy when others are happy. What I struggle to abide is the FUD about an engine with which someone doesn't have any experience or knowledge. By that I mean that folks will say things like the submerged oil pump belt is a bad design, or is unreliable, etc. That's just FUD. Look at the millions of 2.7's on the road for the last nearly 10 years and respect the real world data. Sure, a belt can fail, but again, look at its real world track record. Folks also talk smack about cam phaser issues in the 2.7. As with the oil pump belt, whining about cam phasers in the 2.7 is just more FUD.
