So How Will the New 2024 Ranger Raptor Fair Against the New Tacoma?

I have both on my list, either a Ranger XLT Sport or Tacoma TRD Sport. I am mostly a pavement and gravel kinda guy and will never do rock crawling. I feel a lot of people go overboard on all the 4x4 packages and never use them. I do want something with decent towing ability maybe for a small boat.

Anyone worried about build quality of Ranger raptors? I had a 2020 Explorer ST and it was absolute shit. Ended up lemoning it. Even Ford CEO is saying ford build quality is trash rn. I'm on the waitlist for 2024 Ranger Raptor and Tacom TRD Pro... Have to decide as more gets revealed.

Not even slightly concerned. As you said, if there are massive quality issues, the truck can be lemoned. Unfortunately it looks like all US Raptors are shifting their "hero color" to Shelter Green. I'm guessing Code Orange will remain for ROW Ranger so unfortunately it seems we're kind of stuck in the middle of a transition.

However the specific question was top trim vs top trim. From an "on paper" argument the Raptor wins.

Really what it will boil down to is which company holds the higher quality assurance and whos parts will take a beating and keep going.

I do think that Toyota made a huge mistaken getting away from bulletproof NA motors and getting into the small turbo banger fight. I've never owned a Toyota, but a lot of the die hards are making this argument and it makes sense. Toyota has always sacrificed power for reliability.

Time will tell.

I loved my old Taco from 2009 but when I was test driving trucks in 2019, the feel of the Ranger motor was so much better to me that I couldn't justify another Tacoma.

I'm very interested to see how their new hybrids feel.

Small correction to something you posted. I believe government regulations force their hand not technology. EPA and CARB are just evil organizations IMO. We can also thank this s*** hole known as California for a lot of Nationwide b*******.

I’m not sure I agree that these new legislations are all bad. After all, we have come a long way since the days of 7L V8’s with 220 HP. I don’t think Toyota’s engine choice was based on legislation either. After all, Ford can still sell forced induction engines with 710HP. I’m enjoying this new era of high output, low displacement 4 and 6 cylinder engines we’re in. We have 400HP Explorers and Rangers now which is insane!

No I think that Toyota attracts a certain type of buyer and they know that. The type that really views cars as an appliance to get from A to B and nothing more. And they know that type of buyer is okay with very little power as long as they “don’t have to worry about it”. Hell they sell a “TRD” version of a CAMRY with zero engine changes. It’s just a different kind of buyer. Basic, uninformed, and practical above all else. The kind of people that actually read the IIHS reports and use Eco mode day to day. They type of people that can’t merge onto the highway and stay home when it snows a little.

Lots of chatter about the current models in this thread but if you focus on what the ‘24 model year looks like, it’s not even close! I’ve driven nothing but 2 Ford trucks the last almost 30 years but Fords Ranger lineup looks weak across the entire lineup except for comparing the the two halo trucks... The Raptor seems like a clear winner over the TRD Pro.

Starting with the big items, Toyota offers three cab/bed configurations, Ford only one. Toyotas iForce Max hybrid option and no hybrid drivetrain option from Ford. The Trailhunter is an overland specific model, Ford has nothing. TRD Off-road model with additional 4x4 chops, no Tremor package from Ford. Toyota offers 8 models compared to only 4 from Ford.

I’ve been wanting a new Ranger for years, but holding out for the new 6G. Now I’m almost certain my next truck will be a Tacoma. Even feels weird typing that out! ?

Exactly. Like people complain about CA all the time yet they are one of the only states that guarantees you get an actual fucking meal at work, and if you work through it you get paid. CA has a lot of issues, but it's really weird that people talk all this smack when in many ways they have the right idea on a lot. It's just execution that needs some work.

Because the rest of us that don't want anything to do with your state still have to deal with the repercussions of your politics and regulations sadly. Don't get the wrong idea it's not like I hold you personally responsible. I don't know how you vote or what policies you support or don't support and I don't want to know. All I know is a lot of things I deal with on the opposite side of the nation are the direct result of crap coming out of California.
