I thought there were pictures of a cracked bed posted somewhere. Was that something else?
That user never posted again to confirm what the issue actually was. Basically just dumped those pictures and left.

Ford themselves say (on the official TSB for this) that it's only necessary to install if you plan on offroading with a camper shell. They even say specifically "extreme offroad conditions".

Very likely unnecessary and a waste of money for the vast majority of people. There's a lot of chickenlittles on this forum who think crawling the mall parking lot or driving a gravel road requires j-braces.

I'll remind everyone here that there hasn't been a single 6G ranger owner that has had any confirmed/verified issues occur from not having j-braces and the trucks have been out for over 2 years now.
Sorry boss, but that's not quite right.

About this product
Why Buy
Required when installing accessories extending above the load box side rail and weighing more than 88lb (40kg)

Details
These brackets have been developed by Ford to brace the floor to the wall of the load box to ensure that the off-road durability performance of the load box is maintained with the installation of load-bearing elevated accessories.
  • When installing accessories extending above the load box side rail and weighing more than 88lb (40kg) must have load box reinforcement brackets installed
  • Examples of these include service body, bed caps, ladder racks, carrier cross bars, load-bearing elevated accessories
  • These reinforcement brackets have been designed specifically for Ford Licensed Accessories and their suitability for use with any aftermarket (non-Ford Licensed) accessories will need to be determined by the aftermarket manufacturer or supplier
That's from the Ford website. These are needed for anything over 88lbs being supported by the bed rails.

The bed was designed to flex with the frame. With additional weight on the rails, you're increasing torsional forces on the seams in question any time the truck flexes. Doesn't matter if that torque is applied when crawling over rocks or going over railroad tracks, it's still above the design specifications of those seams.

This is how ford described it on the official tech service bulletin that went out to all service departments

That's all well and good, but you're forgetting to follow the money. Ford is installing these on EVERY Ranger with a Ford licensed topper regardless of trim or intended use case. If these weren't deemed necessary for typical use, Ford wouldn't spend the money to install these, and especially not on something like a base 2WD XL that isn't built for "extreme off-road conditions". But again, all the talk about off road use is just a red herring. Ford knows if the bed cracks or fails with a customer installed accessory they can blame it on user or installer error.

Remember that scene in Fight Club where Jack is discussing how manufacturers determine if they are going to issue a recall? Someone at a Ford did the math, and they determined the potential liability of a bed falling due to a licensed accessory purchased through Ford was greater than the cost of installing this part. That should raise alarm bells.

If you still disagree, that's cool, but if Ford is concerned enough to install these parts after the fact on their dime, then it's likely something we should be concerned about as well. Hopefully I'm wrong, but when there is smoke...

Thanks for the heads up, just ordered them. When they cancelled my original order, they didn't refund me my reward points. This time its out of pocket, doesn't seem fair.

Its pretty specific, they say the problem is for trucks with loads above the bed while off-roading(or driving on public roads in Los Angeles). So unless you're overlanding its probably not a huge issue.

I wonder how long they will last…kinda feel bad about our west coast friends.
Placed an order today, already sold out:

We apologize for the inconvenience, but one of your Ford Accessories is now on backorder. We’ll update you when it becomes available again.

I had ordered from Ford OEM Parts Direct a couple of weeks ago for $138.98 shipped from NJ to California. Mine shipped out yesterday via USPS priority mail and should be here on Saturday. This is for the Ranger Raptor version. I paid $124.66 + $14.32 for expedited shipping.

Just in time when I don't have money from stocking up on toilet paper. :)
Most toilet paper is made in the USA, but I get it.
At least the port strike is over. We had some serious tonnage of stuff being held up, already
delayed from supply chain issues, that would have delayed some projects even more.
The multi-billion $ data center people are buying up all the electrical equipment and generators they can get their hands on, often even before there is a project on the drawings to use that stuff.
Almost 2 years to get big electrical equipment and big generators right now.
