2.7L Fuel Economy

Engines loosen up after 5-10k miles. Not just 2k - that is initial break-in, but more HP and more MPG happen after much more mileage.

To truly see the effects, though, you have to keep your truck stock - which seems unlikely for most people. (along with fuelly/spreadsheet tracking)

Guess I've been lucky. Mines been averaging around 22-23 mpg since new. When it had around 200 miles we did a 260 mile day trip in it. Filled the tank with 91 octane before and after. Hand calculated at 28 mpg for that trip.

Averaging 18mpg 80% city 20% highway on a 2025 Lariat. Did manage 19.8 on highway only. 5220 miles on the truck. Also I’m in Texas so that’s with the A/C going full Blast.

At 4500 miles, my average is 17.4. I have not reset this so I may be getting a little better mileage at the present time. This is with 80% city driving, 20% highway. Also, the driving mode is set to normal but occasionally, sport mode. I would assume better mileage in eco mode with highway driving.

Hey guys just trying to figure out what is normal here. I got my Ranger XLT 2.7L V6 two weeks ago and have been loving it so far. Only 400 miles on it so far but my fuel economy has been a bit worst than I was expecting.

Getting between 16-17 MPG with an even mix of highway (70 MPH), country back roads (45 MPH), and city driving (25 MPH stop and go). At best, I got 19.5 MPG on a pure highway drive that we did for 80 miles, but with my normal driving I am still between 16 and 17 MPG.

Is that normal? Maybe my engine is still breaking in? I'm only driving in Normal mode, and I like to give it some gas sometimes to enjoy that amazing engine but for the most part I am cruising under 2k RPM. Thanks all!

I have a 2025 XLT FX4 with the 2.7L. I've put 15K miles on it in year 1.
1. I just did a 2800 mile road trip from TX to VA and back. All in I got about 23 MPG. The only reason I got 23 was because of the nutty states that the speed limit is only 55 - 65. I set cruise about 7 MPH over the speed limit so through much of the drive I was at 77 MPH. That has a huge negative on MPG.
2. Anyone telling you they are getting 24+ MPG isn't on a highway that is 70+ MPH. To get that type of MPG you've gotta be doing 65 MPH or less consistently and trying to drive in a manner that maximizes MPG.
3. You'll get better MPG over time, but don't stress about it. 2 or 3 MPG is probably $20 or $30/mth. It's literally of zero concern or value. Just drive and enjoy!

This is the same with the 2.3

The truck is certainly capable of getting 26+ mpg. However, you have to be driving on the right roads with lower speed limits and you have to keep the truck stock. I'm just happy that even after adding 33" tires I can consistently get over 20 MPG when driving 75+ mph on the interstate.

This is spot on. Daily driving (not in BFE with farm roads and such) will get you 18-19 MPG unless you're driving like grandpa.

My old Subaru Crosstrek was supposed to get like 30 MPG. On my commute to work I got 22 MPG (vs 17 in the Ranger)and highway trips I got 25 MPG (vs 19-20 MPG Ranger). I had more of a lead foot in the Sube due to it being so lethargic haha. But still, a loss of just 5 MPG to get a v6 truck is so worth it!

I have a fairly heavy foot and my around town mileage stays around 22.8, but when I get on the highway I typically see 24-25 mpg doing the posted speed plus whatever it takes to move with traffic, in Texas that can be 10-20 mph over. In the PNW easily 10 over.

Thanks all. Just hit 975 miles yesterday! We did a 400 mile roadtrip, driving between 55 MPH and 80 MPH. Averaged 21.5 MPG on the way there, and the way back too. I'll take it

That's about what I would expect, especially if you're closer to 80 than 55.

Mid teens around town and low 20's on the highway. In town really sucks here due to poorly coordinated traffic lights and excessive backups where you don't move. I try to help by coasting up to stopped traffic but still only getting 15-16. Just passed the 4,000 mile mark.
