If the factory crank case ventilation system is working properly and you are using the correct oil, changing it at the proper intervals, and using high quality gasoline. A catch can is absolutely not necessary!!!

This has been proven over and over again on the DI only 2.3 engine and on the 3.0 in the Explorer ST.

I believe the study used an eco boost 2.3L with DI only and did show the benefit of detergents. Maybe the detergents are getting there via the EGR system or possibly there is valve overlap and the intake valves are not completely shut when the fuel is injected. Just hypothetically thinking here

Ford uses variable cam timing (called Ti-VCT) to help reduce NOx, so EGR system is not needed. Without EGR, valve deposits can be reduced, but yet still will be present.
