2026 Ranger XLT FX4 currently 1500 miles. Planning a 9 hour trip, highway and mountain roads. Should I change the oil before the trip. New to the site, thanks all.
Yes, It is a good time for your first oil change anyway.

i would change the oil after the trip.

i bought a new ranger last august. i went in to have a recall done and added an oil change on my recall appointment. i had about 1200kms on it at the time. the service advisor talked me out of doing the oil change saying it isn't necessary. i mean usually people say they convince you to pay for things that aren't necessary so if he was actively trying to stop me from spending money there the reason must be good? was good enough for me anyway!

oh and there is no such thing as a special break in oil these days.

Be careful with Service Advisors not all of them are on top of everything. When I bought my Ranger in for the Side Curtain Airbag recall, the Service Advisor called me and said, "You didn't tell me the whole ceiling needs to be removed, you'll have to leave it overnight" . A Service Advisor should be on top of recalls.

I like to get the wear metals out of the system early. Changed mine at 500 and 1,500 miles. I fully geeked out and sent oil samples to a lab. Silicone went from 90ppm to 40ppm. Total Metals went from 41ppm to 20ppm. With the early oil changes done my regular schedule will be every 5k miles.

I didn’t change my oil early. I did it at 5000, 10000 and 15000. Other than the cost of the oil change, there’s no downside to doing a break in oil change. If it gives you peace of mind, then go for it.
