I don't think he's saying that K&N in general is garbage, I think he's saying stay away from "oiled" air filters if you plan to take your truck off-road. Dry filters only.
This. Oiled filters are marketing. They cause more headaches than they are worth.

So what exactly trouble they cause?
Interested of what could go wrong 🙂
I have used K&N in race/rallycars for 20 years, cos havent found a better one yet.

If your RR air filter collects rocks, there could be something quite weird happening 🤔

Most of the time it's over oiling. The whole "more must be better" misunderstanding. Oil coats the MAF sensor and the ECU can't make heads or tails of what the A/F mixture should be.

Plus they actually don't filter out dust as well as paper filters.

Save money, stick with stock.

A non daily driver seeing occasional track use is considerably different than out in real world every day. Heck, serious drag racers don't even use air filters.

Back in 80s we ALL put K&Ns in our rigs. Didn't take long to find dust or oil (or both) in the intake and sensors to clean. Switched back to paper and no more problems.

The "rock collector" remark meant they won't filter out anything smaller than a rock... Incidentally I have more than once found tiny gravel/pebbles in my air box....

We gave friendly advice based on experience. Take it or leave it, no worries.

I had a K&N on my 5G until one day when I went to clean and re-oil it. The oil didn't seem to soak in very well, I let it drop an inch or two and it left oil drops on the bench. I thought what would happen if a drop of oil hit the spinning turbo blades. Probably over-thinking it, but I went to a cleanable dry filter. Not sure if I am going to change anything on my Raptor.

VW 1.8T. Put a K&N at 30k miles. The car ended burning 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles. The intake and ducts were all soiled on fine dust, excellent for grinding every metal piece on the pistons.
K&N is thrash.

I’ll bite. I bought my Raptor used with a k&n. Just did the refresh on the filter but no stores near me carry a paper oem filter. Where is everyone buying them from?

Sure you need to pay more attention with oiled air filter, it needs cleaning, oiling properly and also cleaning of MAF sensor, in some cars also throttle body, MAP sensor and some other parts.
Typically they filter probably 99% of dirt and rest is collected by oil filter.
I drove 100.000 miles with one Mitsubishi engine using K&N filter. When engine overhaul was done it was basically not worn at all. Just the cylinders became oval, but that was due to stupid boost pressure used, not because of dirt inside the engine.

Would I put K&N in my RR ? Probably not, I think why.
Would I use K&N in car, that has engine output 2x original and OEM airbox can not be used? Definitely yes, selection of that kind of air filters is not too big.

Certain Audi/VW 1.8 engines are well known to drink almost as much oil as gasoline, like 1-2 liters per 1000 kilometers. This is because of clogged piston oil flow holes and/or stuck oil rings. Even driving without an air filter would not normally do damage like that.

Some racecars do not use air filter for a reason. Sudden, very high flow of air can suck air filter in the engine, which obviously is not a good thing. In fast drag cars engine overhaul is done so often that it would not matter anyway, better to not use any air filter.
