Next generation 2030 Ranger (7th gen) already in development

The Blue Oval has confirmed that the new Ford Ranger is already being developed in Australia and is due by 2030. Engineers stationed at Ford’s Australian engineering headquarters are already working on the next-generation ute and may see the project through to the end if things go well.

However, it remains to be seen whether the Australian Ford engineers will be able to see their work through to the end, as Ford CEO Jim Farley has openly questioned the financial viability of developing vehicles in Australia.

As a product management professional, manufacturers are always designing, developing, building, and testing the follow-on product as part of life cycle management. No big surprise here… In the industries I’ve worked in, going from chip concept to final product integration and delivery can take 8-10 years.

Development of the next Ford Ranger has already begun, and Australia will still play a part in creating what could be the next best-seller.


Ford has confirmed it is already working on the next-generation Ranger ute, due around 2030, with development underway at its Australian engineering headquarters.
However, it is not guaranteed that the Melbourne-based engineers will see the next-generation Ranger through to its completion, after comments from Ford CEO Jim Farley earlier this year questioning the financial viability of developing vehicles in Australia.
Though not expected until the next decade due to the long lifecycle of light-commercial vehicles, the plans for the new version of Australia’s favourite car indicate Ford’s desire to leverage its most popular model for the foreseeable future.

Speaking to Drive, Ford Australia president and CEO Fadi Mawal said the team of around 1500 engineers are already working on the anticipated new model: “Our plan is to continue to lead development of Ranger and Everest into the future.

“We’re working on that [new-generation Ranger] right now, and so we’ll continue to work on that until someone says otherwise.


“Our team here is recognised as a world-class team, we’re delivering best-in-class products, we’re doing it better than many others around the world, so we hope to continue to do that.”
With increasingly tightening New Vehicle Emissions Standard (NVES) regulations and the rise in electrification – seen first with the introduction of the Ranger plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in 2025 – it is expected Ford will push further into electric power for its next workhorse.
It also bodes well that Australian engineers will influence the new model, as the current and previous-generation Rangers have been well received commercially and critically due to relatively high levels of refinement, comfort, and performance.



However, whether Ford Australia engineers will be able to see the next-generation Ranger to fruition is still to be determined.
When Ford CEO Jim Farley visited Australia earlier this year to watch the brand's return to Formula One, he stated the engineering team could be at risk due to higher wages compared to developing markets in Asia.

“We have to work with your government, because we have to be competitive on speed and cost here in Australia versus China or Vietnam or other places,” Farley told media in March.

“There is a premium for innovation, so we're willing to pay, but your government has to decide if they want engineers in your country, or do you want to be a country of hairdressers and bankers?


“They need to decide if they want to help us equalise the cost differential, because this is among the most expensive places to have engineers on the planet.”
Mawal said talks with government to keep jobs in Australia are still ongoing, but is hopeful Ford Australia can deliver another world-class product in the new Ranger.


“Jim met with government to talk to them about that, and we’re continuing to do that,” Mawal said.
“His objective was to say how much he thought of the capability we have in Australia and how much he values that, and how much Ford values that.
“He wanted to make sure the government understood how much it was valued, and he wanted to make sure it was understood what we do and how we do it, and how important it is to Ford.

“And he wanted to see whether they want to partner with us on that journey, and so we’re still in dialogue with the government about that, and we’d be open if they wanted to partner with us to secure the future.”

The Ranger is the best selling car in Australia. Not the best selling truck, the best selling vehicle overall. In New Zealand, England, Ireland, and mainland Europe; the Ranger is the best selling truck. The Ranger absolutely dominates truck sales outside of the US.

The key difference in the Aussie/Pacific market is they offer diesel drive trains...with no emission BS.

And why those diesel Rangers are ultra reliable and easy a lifetime truck. Over here in USA, we are at the mercy of goverment emission regulation so stuck with crap gas variations.

They had it for a decade before we did!

The first Ranger was built in 1982 in Louisville, KY. Australia got its first Ranger in 2007 but they did have the Courier prior to that.

We’ll get the new one and it will be built at TTP but it likely won’t be called Ranger in North America.

I don’t think it makes any sense for the rest of the world ranger designed in Australia to get bigger and become a T100 In North America.

I don’t think Ford suddenly believes that the 2030 ranger will become a big hit and there should be another T6x body on frame plant.

ford seems to be happy with the production and inventory of broncos and rangers they have.

I hope they continue developing the Ranger there. I've had four Rangers that have been developed there (2017 Ranger, 2021 Ranger Raptor, and two 2023 Ranger Raptors) and they seem much better put together and developed than my 2023 Ford Bronco! Also, the A/C in the two 2023 Ranger Raptors are the coldest I have ever had in a vehicle!

ford seems to be happy with the production and inventory of broncos and rangers they have.

The Tacoma is already larger than the Ranger. The current Ranger does not split the difference very well between the Maverick/Fathom and the F-150. Growing the Ranger by a modest amount results in the Ranger better slotting between those two.

The Ranger sales numbers are far behind the Tacoma, GM twins and even the Frontier. If Ford is happy with that, then the company is in trouble.

MAP production capacity will be largely maxed out with the Bronco, Bronco pickup and Lincoln Bronco. TTP needs a product to build and that is where the Ranger replacement will land. There likely will be other models built there also.
