I'll run both + and - to the tow harness. It's a factory tow harness so there's already a ground wire there for the 7 pin.
We've kind of proven that the wiring is there on the bed harness. Just go pin out the harness (look for the orange loom) and the two wires that aren't in orange tape should be the 12VDC line. Then you're not going to have to filet a harness and will also have a dedicated circuit.

That's good news. What are the chances the bed accessory harness that came with my Maverick will fit... Mavericks come with a pigtail and harness so you can add bed lighting. I'll have to go dig it out. Saw it a few months ago in the garage.

Probably zero, but if the pins are the same you can de-pin and order a shell and repin it.

When I checked behind the blank on my XL there was no such harness. Any chance that orange harness taps into the body harness somewhere near? I figured XLs just had inferior body harnesses?

My part came in today and I’m in the middle of install.

Quick question: Im trying to separate the plug from the old wiring harness. Is this a brute force thing or is there some sort of pin or detent or some other technique to it?

No brute force…. Like many on the electrical plugs on a vehicle…. One side u will see grip marks, the other side will have a piece of plastic that u push down on and while doing that, it should pull apart

I figured it out…

It was a bit of brute force and a bit of the angle I was working from but after what seemed forever it separated. I did not need to manipulate a detent or any tab/pin.

It's tucked up along the frame rail and it's not visible behind the blank in the bed. If you have neither the 120 volt or the 12 volt plug your connector will be plugged with an empty connector. You can either remove the empty connector and order some pins to add your wires or just order this one which is fully pinned, but you will only use 2 of the wires.

I don't really think it will be an issue, it's up pretty high and the wheel liner keeps the splash away from that area.
I think we’ve all seen rust around wheel wells on trucks so I’m not too comfortable with that assumption.

Don't worry, the Scanstrut is a superior 12 volt socket. Mine works perfectly and the door locks open or can be used as a plug retainer. Best 12 volt socket I've used, you can tell right away by the feel.
I’m sure it’s a good one. But superior? I’ll take 180w over the scanstrut’s 150w (from their website: “ and an impressive 150W max power”), and the ease of installation paired with the low cost of the ford oem part especially if subsidized with points. To each their own though.

Ratings can be ambiguous. There can be continuous ratings and peak ratings. There is also the voltage to consider, is it rated at 12 volts or 13.5 volts? Additionally I'm not sure if there is any authority regulating this or if a manufacturer can just claim a number. In reality 15 amps is a lot to ask from any 12 volt socket, the original design is just not that robust. If I needed that kind of power I'd go with Anderson. Maybe Scan Strut is just rated more conservatively. I'm confident the Scan Strut is a high quality product and will likely hold up just fine for years.

Of course now with the discovery of this low priced Ford option it makes it the sensible choice but at the time I did mine it was in the several hundreds so I chose Scanstrut.
