I talked with my dealer about getting the tune installed prior to delivery next week, but he said they won't be able to get the tuner in until October. Not sure how everyone else's delivery estimates are looking, but doesn't look like I'll be getting all 36000 miles of that FPP warranty after all. I guess I can settle for 35750

Talked to a Ford Performance dealership yesterday. His Performance rep happened to be in the office when I called. Apparently the tune should start to be available sometime next week. They put a work order in for me to have it done ASAP. I'll check back after with a review.

So, I've been calling around (to Ford Service Depts.) asking for an installation quote, and I've been getting "We don't install products unless they have been purchased from us".
Is that really common?

What are my choices? I guess I'd rather to go an independent service dept in/around Minneapolis.

Luckily it was just a UAW worker that mated the engine & driveshaft to the trans.
They don’t actually build the transmissions themselves.
If they did, we’d be seeing real issues with them!!!
That transmission is likely built in Sharonville, OH plant by UAW workers.

I have a similar policy at my shop for a multitude of reasons. Usually it is because people bring me parts for the incorrect application, missing crucial components, or just cheap Amazon junk with no instructions that ruins my techs days. I imagine in this case they just don't think it is worth their time because they are not getting a margin on the part since it is customer supplied.

I don't know why they are requiring a dealer/ASE mechanic to install. Even the manager at a Ford dealer could install this. Let the buyer install it and register it so Ford knows the VIN it was installed in. This looks like it's going to be a pain in the arse to get installed.

Yea, I agree. I can empathize with @welker when it comes to dubious parts, but Ford puts a requirement out there, but then service centers put additional stipulations... It leaves the consumer is a tough position. So, now I have this product that I can't get installed unless I want to just give up the warranty aspect of it. It's really a poor situation.

Unions have nothing to do with anything, jesus.
I threw that union comment in there because the guy constantly shits on union workers. I have nothing against union workers. Sorry you and some others didn't catch my drift.

So we go to a ford dealership to get this installed, 2 months later Ford performance releases an update for the tune...Now we need to go back to the dealer again? From videos I have seen you need to make an account and it uploads your stock tune and then adds the performance tune. Looks like the account it registers is with the ford dealerships email or can we make the account ourselves? This has been confusing.

We went through all of this w/6g Bronco as well...it's actually REALLY simple. You can do all the steps up until you push the button to flash your engine computer, and have everything ready to go so all the tech has to do is push the "ok" button if you wish. Realistically he doesn't even need to do that, all you need is a receipt saying he did! Of course be prepared when you get this thing for it to not work out of the box...Bronco one was a complete fail at launch, and still kinda flaky, so if you wana be the guy who calls tech support instead of the tech that will get you a long way too! I have done several of these and I will update this thread when I get mine (I am an ase independent shop, and former Ford dealer tech)

EDIT: As far as the "account" goes, you should definitely have that linked to your own email and password, however, that can be changed in the future...IE if you sell the vehicle you can have Ford performance put the voucher in the new owners credentials. We had to do this when I bought my 2nd Bronco used from a buddy of mine, and it wasn't a problem (he had already installed FP tune, and gave me the device). Once used tho the procal device, and the voucher for the tune, are married to the VIN they are installed on, so you should provide that particular procal to the new owner if you sell, or to the dealer if you trade the vehicle in. It won't do you any good on any future vehicles you may own, so it's just the right thing to do! If a dealer was to use their own email/password when installing, FP tech support can help you change it (I don't remember what we had to do, but it wasn't a big deal)

I texted my salesman about this tune and he said it is available, but you have to burn "premium." I always do in these high performance engines. Just putting this out there fyi.........

Where I live 91 is the "preferred" premium unleaded. 93 is E10, 91 is E0. I use both depending on where I stop for fuel (E10 is mandated in emissions controlled counties). Performance is about equal between the two, but mileage is better w/91. The tune (at least on Bronco) will actually run 87 w/out causing engine damage, but will have to "detune" itself to compensate for knock. I would reccomend that anyone who plans to install the tune starts using 91/93 now in order to get a "baseline" idea of what performance and mileage will be purely from improved octane...then see what the tune does to build on that!
