I did the NHTSA VIN search, and I'm hit! For better or for worse:

ON YOUR VEHICLE, IT MAY BE POSSIBLE THAT ONE OR MORE ENGINE CAMSHAFT ROLLER FINGER FOLLOWERS WERE NOT PROPERLY INSTALLED AT THE TIME OF ENGINE ASSEMBLY.

AN IMPROPERLY INSTALLED ENGINE CAMSHAFT ROLLER FINGER FOLLOWER MAY RESULT IN ENGINE FAILURE, RESULTING IN A NO-START CONDITION OR A LOSS OF MOTIVE POWER. A LOSS OF MOTIVE POWER INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH. YOUR VEHICLE MAY ALSO EXPERIENCE ENGINE TICKING OR TAPPING NOISE, AND OR A LOW-VOLUME OIL LEAK DUE TO THIS CONDITION.

A REMEDY IS NOT YET AVAILABLE. FORD MOTOR COMPANY IS WORKING TO PROVIDE PARTS FOR THIS REPAIR. WHEN THE REMEDY BECOMES AVAILABLE, FORD MOTOR COMPANY WILL NOTIFY YOU VIA MAIL TO SCHEDULE A SERVICE APPOINTMENT WITH YOUR DEALER FOR REPAIRS TO BE COMPLETED FREE OF CHARGE. THE REMEDY IS ANTICIPATED TO BE AVAILABLE 4TH QUARTER OF 2026.
well that sucks.

I guess the only good news is only 1704 explorers, broncos and rangers are affected if I am reading that right.

so probably only a couple of hundred rangers

and November seems like a long time not to sell those models so I imagine Ford will bust butt to get this out.

it might be a little esrly to look this up by vin.

but it you win the lottery it looks like a new engine?
Only 1704? Sounds like one employee wasn’t trained properly

It’s in Ecoboost Mustang. So wonder why it’s only these vehicles. Something had to have been done different on the SUV/Truck
Different production line? Different plant? Different employee who they found out was messing with the motors as they went by? It’s a really small percentage of the 2.3 production so I’m guessing it can be narrowed down to a single person or event. We’ll probably never know though.

It's an odd date range. Ford's Cleveland plant builds almost all of the MPC 2.3L EB's for NA, with some early Mustang version having some engines produced in Valencia, Spain. Ford produces ~250k MPC 2.3L EB engines annually from Cleveland.

The diagram shows the relationship between:
  • camshaft
  • roller
  • finger follower
  • lash adjuster
  • valve spring
That layout is fundamentally how the modern MPC 2.3L EcoBoost valvetrain works.

So many recalls for this truck. I checked mine and I'm in the clear for now...

yea probably something along those lines. I figured engines were built somewhere specific then moved to the different plants. But yea still a small percentage

It’s like holding your breath waiting for the next shoe to drop. Not sure what that expression actually means, but I’m out of breath.

Sure some recalls but I’ve never been without my truck for more than half a day because of them. It’s driven me cross country and up and down the east coast. No problem.

Yes! I was teasing around a bit. Although I get a lot of mail from Ford, my 2024 has been bulletproof. Not a lot of miles in it yet, but I love the truck and there was no going back to Tundra after their loss of mechanical invincibility and appearance. Chased the look of the Raptor, and failed..
